Game Preview
After an embarrassing 11-0 beatdown in Game 2 of this series, the Pirates come out hungry for a split in the Sunday finale, and for once they've got the pitching matchup on their side. Braxton Ashcraft toes the rubber at PNC Park determined to keep Chicago's bats in check, opening with his mid-90s fastball working the zone efficiently while Jameson Taillon labors through the Pittsburgh order at barely 85 mph.
The Cubs draw first blood in the first inning as Nico Hoerner works a leadoff hit and eventually scores on a Michael Conforto sac fly, but Ashcraft settles in, retiring the next several batters with authority. Pittsburgh responds in the second when Nick Gonzales lines a double into the left-center gap, and a productive groundout from Ryan O'Hearn plates him to tie it. The Pirates take the lead in the third as Brandon Lowe drives a Taillon cutter into the right-field seats for a solo shot.
The game's defining moment arrives in the fifth inning. Taillon, visibly laboring and showing diminishing stuff, issues back-to-back walks before Gonzales delivers a two-run single up the middle, making it 4-1 Pirates. A Jake Mangum RBI single adds insurance. The Cubs scratch back in the sixth on a Pedro Ramírez double that scores Hoerner, but Ashcraft toughens up through seven innings before handing off to the Pittsburgh bullpen. Chicago makes it 5-3 in the seventh but can't solve the backend arms. Pittsburgh breaks the series slide and protects home ground on a pleasant PNC afternoon.
Ashcraft's elite ERA and high-octane arsenal vs. Taillon's poor numbers and diminished velocity is a significant edge. However, Chicago's lineup depth and bullpen quality plus their series dominance temper confidence. Moderate lean.
