Gerrit Cole draws the start for New York, and his combination of a high-spin four-seamer and a revived changeup should play well against a predominantly left-handed Pittsburgh top of the order. Paul Skenes counters for the Pirates; the rookie’s power fastball/slider mix will miss bats, but the Yankees’ disciplined lineup has already shown it can wait him out. Early on, Cole’s only blemish comes in the first when Bryan Reynolds ambushes a first-pitch fastball and lines an RBI double. After that, Cole settles into six innings of one-run ball, striking out eight. The Yankees answer immediately. In the bottom of the second, Giancarlo Stanton works a walk and Juan Soto (acquired over the winter) yanks a 2-0 slider into the right-field seats. An inning later, Anthony Volpe legs out an infield single, steals second, and scores on Aaron Judge’s opposite-field single, putting New York up 3-1. Skenes reaches the 80-pitch mark by the fifth; when he returns for the sixth, Soto greets him with a double and Alex Verdugo pushes him home with a line-drive single, ending the rookie’s night. The Pirates’ middle relief—an ongoing soft spot—yields two more insurance runs in the seventh and eighth as the Yankees stack quality at-bats against left-hander Jose Hernandez and right-hander Colin Holderman. Pittsburgh’s late push comes in the eighth when Oneil Cruz turns on a Wandy Peralta sinker for a solo homer, but Clay Holmes slams the door with a clean ninth. New York’s recent dominance in the matchup, superior run differential, and deeper bullpen collectively tilt the balance. Expect the Yankees to keep their winning streak alive, riding sturdy starting pitching, selective power hitting, and another airtight late-inning formula.
